A volume produced by the University of Catania research unit within the framework of the MeMo – Memory of Montecassino project

Among the most recent outcomes of the MeMo – Memory of Montecassino project is the publication of Incunaboli a Montecassino, a volume produced by the University of Catania research unit and devoted to the study of the fifteenth-century printed books preserved at the Abbey of Montecassino.

The volume represents the culmination of several years of research dedicated to the survey, description and analysis of the incunabula housed in Montecassino’s two principal book collections: the Monastic Library “Paolo Diacono” and the State Library attached to the National Monument of Montecassino. This work forms part of the broader effort promoted by MeMo to study and enhance Montecassino’s written heritage, extending the investigation beyond manuscripts to include the earliest products of the printing press.

Uno degli aspetti più significativi della ricerca riguarda l’approccio metodologico adottato. Gli esemplari sono stati infatti descritti secondo criteri che guardano non soltanto all’edizione nel suo insieme, ma alla storia concreta di ogni singolo volume. Annotazioni di lettura, note di possesso, legature, restauri, tracce d’uso e passaggi di proprietà diventano così elementi fondamentali per ricostruire le vicende dei libri e delle persone che li hanno posseduti, letti e conservati nel corso dei secoli. Tale impostazione consente di considerare gli incunaboli non semplicemente come testimoni della storia della stampa, ma come oggetti culturali dotati di una propria biografia.

Il catalogo offre inoltre un aggiornamento complessivo delle conoscenze sul patrimonio incunabolistico cassinese, arricchito da nuove identificazioni, verifiche sugli esemplari conservati e approfondimenti sulle provenienze. Particolare attenzione è stata dedicata alla ricostruzione dei percorsi seguiti dai volumi nel tempo, contribuendo a restituire una visione più articolata della formazione e della storia delle raccolte librarie di Montecassino.

The publication represents a significant achievement of the activities carried out by the University of Catania research unit within MeMo and provides scholars with an important new tool for investigating the history of books, libraries and the circulation of written culture. At the same time, it confirms that the enhancement of Montecassino’s heritage depends not only on preservation and digitisation, but also on the production of scholarly resources capable of making the evidence of the past more accessible and meaningful for future research.
