Entering the Heart of Research with LIBeR and MeMo at the Unicas Open Day
Once again this year, the Department of Humanities at the University of Cassino and Lazio Meridionale will welcome female and male secondary school students on Open Day, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 20. The initiative will provide a closer look at the educational paths and research activities promoted within the Department. Within this framework, the LIBeR – Book and Research workshop and the MeMo – Memory of Montecassino project will propose a path dedicated to the written heritage and the study of ancient books.

The day is conceived not merely as an informational event, but as an opportunity to experience laboratory work directly. Participants will be able to attend video presentations illustrating the different phases of the MeMo project, follow demonstrations of the manuscript digitisation process, understand how a scholarly description is developed, and see how a material artefact is transformed into its digital representation. Particular attention will also be given to the ways in which the enhancement of written heritage today increasingly takes place through digital platforms and online libraries, which ensure wider accessibility and long-term preservation. Alongside these activities, students and teachers will have the opportunity to examine at close range, become familiar with the tools of codicological and palaeographical analysis, and engage in conversation with researchers and doctoral candidates involved in the project.

Through LIBeR and MeMo, the study of written heritage emerges as a dynamic field of education and research, combining historical and philological expertise with digital methodologies and opening up professional pathways related to the preservation, cataloguing, and enhancement of cultural heritage.
For those who find themselves choosing their university path in the humanities, the Open Day will be an opportunity to connect with an active scholarly community and gain a concrete understanding of how a written heritage research project is born and developed, imagining a course of study that combines history, method and innovation.
