Analysis and scientific description of medieval manuscripts in Montecassino’s Archive.

Dr. Federica Gargano
Duration of research grant: 12.2022-10.2024; 12.2024-10.2025

I personally proceed with the cataloguing in Manus of the manuscripts preserved at the Montecassino Archives and, above all, with the revision and publication of the cards produced by the cataloguing staff of MeMo, in whose sphere there are also those who deal in particular with glossed Bibles, Greek manuscripts and furthermore with those exceeding the Codicum Casinensium Manuscriptorum Catalogus of Mauro Inguanez (1915-1940; codd. 1-600). The descriptions are drafted from scratch, or draw from Inguanez’s catalog, or finally consist of retrieval from the most current and authoritative specialized works, such as the catalogs The Bible at Montecassino (2021), The decorated codices of the Montecassino Archives (1994-2006), Miniatures at Montecassino (CD and Ebook, 2005; 2013),Dated Manuscripts of the provinces of Frosinone, Rieti, Viterbo, ( 2007). I will unify the cards to the standard defined for the project, of course in compliance with ICCU standards pertaining to manuscript cataloguing, but also in the broader perspective of publication and fruition on the Manus on line and Omnes Memory of Montecassino and MeMo Digital Library portals; with related metadata processing and definition.

Analysis and scientific description of medieval manuscripts in Montecassino’s Archives.

Dr. Mariangela Palombo
Duration of research grant: 12 months (08/31/2024-08/31/2025)

This research project is part of the activities of description, study and cataloguing of the Greek and Latin manuscripts preserved in the Archives of the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino, a heritage of extraordinary historical and cultural value. Under the supervision of Dr. Federica Gargano, I am particularly involved in the editing of the descriptive sheets of the codices, which are progressively uploaded and made available within the Manus Online database, a national reference platform for cataloguing manuscripts. The work also includes the progressive digitization of the manuscripts in order to make the data more widely and immediately accessible to the public. In parallel, I collaborate with the MeMo project to revise the metadata and publish the digital objects on the MeMo Digital Library. In addition, I participate in the implementation of content for the MeMo.Unicas portal, which is the access point for the project at the institutional and dissemination level.

For a virtual and accessible museum of the library heritage of Montecassino

Dr. Laura Saturnino
Duration of research grant: 12 months (07.01.2024-30.06.2025)

The research focuses on the enhancement and dissemination of the cultural heritage of the Abbey of Montecassino, from an accessible and technologically advanced perspective. The cultural memory of the Abbey is reconstructed through historical, documentary, and photographic sources.
The project includes the following activities: collecting historical, documentary, and photographic material related to the conservation of Montecassino’s medieval heritage from the post-unification period to World War II; preparing scripts for the creation of multimedia content on the history of manuscript books, miniatures, art, and the most significant aspects of the conservation of Cassinese cultural heritage from the Middle Ages to World War II; drafting content accessible through digital tools (platform and app); identifying the most advanced technological solutions in the museum sector and collaborating with IT specialists to develop the necessary technological tools.
